Fall Equinox 2006:

September 23, 1:03 am local time, 4:03 am GMT

The first day of autumn on Sable Island was cool, breezy and partially overcast. Winds gusted to 13 knots and the temperature peaked at 16°C. A juvenile Northern Harrier and a Great Blue Heron glided over the freshwater ponds near West Light and scared up a small flock of Green-winged Teal. Cedar Waxwings, Northern Orioles and Palm Warblers foraged in the heath vegetation for berries and insects. Although Hurricane Helene was passing more than 700 km southeast of the island, swell generated by the far off storm was crashing ashore on Sable’s beaches.

Best wishes to all who both care about Sable Island and appreciate the role of the Station.
