Early in the morning on June 5th, 2005, the schooner Bowdoin anchored off the north side of Sable Island. Designed and built, in 1921, for exploration in Arctic waters, the schooner is now owned and operated by the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, and serves in a broad range of ocean studies and seamanship programs. The Bowdoin, rigged as a “Grand Banks knockabout schooner”, is 88 ft (27 meters) in overall length, carries 3000 square feet (280 square meters) of sail, and has a crew of sixteen. |
