Coming ashore on Sable Island is often difficult, and launching from the beach can be even more treacherous. For the Bowdoin crew, the longshore bars, rough seas and big surf presented an educational challenge. After several trips between ship and beach – during which everyone got wet - it was decided to anchor a line just beyond the breakers and to use the line, on departure, to pull and control the inflatable rubber boat back through the surf.
