DX was a common telegraphic abbreviation that stood for a signal that traveled a very long distance, and today it is most frequently used in amateur radio (ham radio), and means contacting amateur radio stations in far-off places. Many radio amateurs collect QSL cards – a QSL is the confirmation of a radio contact between two stations.
