The 5-band antenna erected at the Sable Island Station. A DXpedition normally is an expedition to an exotic place. Certain areas of the world have very few to no radio amateurs, and when a station with a rare identification (i.e. call sign) comes on the air, radio amateurs are very keen to communicate with it. To provide opportunities for such contacts (i.e. QSLs), groups of hams transport radio equipment into remote countries or islands. For QSL card purposes, a "country" is any location that is politically and/or physically remote from other jurisdictions/locations. Thus Sable Island, even though it is politically part of Canada, is considered a separate DX country, and is one of 335 countries listed by the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL). Another example is Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean – it is counted as a DX country even though it belongs to France. The rules for assigning DX “country” status can be very complex. |
