Raptors commonly seen on Sable Island are Ospreys, Kestrels, Merlins and Peregrines. Occasionally owls (Snowy, Short-eared and Boreal), young Bald Eagles, and accipiters turn up. The Kestrel Falco sparverius is a colourful falcon about the size of a Blue Jay. In September, following a few days of stormy weather, a female Kestrel was found grounded on Sable Island. On two successive mornings the falcon was seen flopping about in the vegetation, unable to fly, and on the 11th she was captured and held for transport to the mainland.
