A pile of Sable Island horse dung on the north beach. On April 4th, a brief article in the Chronicle Herald newspaper, titled (ever so cutely) “New species found in feces - Beetle named after N.S. is snug as a bug in Sable Island pony poop”, noted a recent scientific publication reporting a new species of rove beetle (Klimaszeski, Majka & Langor, 2006). This species - Atheta novaescotiae - has been found in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and on the French island of Sainte-Pierre et Miquelon. It is very abundant on Sable Island.
