Winter Solstice 2005:
December 21, 2:35 pm local time, 6:35 pm GMT.
From the Latin, the word solstice means “sun stands still” – this describes the impression that for a while before and after the solstice, the sun’s noontime elevation does not seem to change from day to day. On Sable Island the solstice day was windy and cool, with northwest winds gusting to 15 knots, and temperature peaking at 3°C. There was no snow on the ground and no ice on the ponds. Small numbers of Bohemian Waxwings, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Snow Buntings, and Common Redpolls, and a single Catbird flitted and fed in the dune vegetation.
From the Sable Island Green Horse Society, to all Sable’s friends, best wishes for a warm, peaceful and healthy winter. |
