Looking southwards across the island, all that can be seen of south beach in the distance is its outer edge, now reduced to a strip of sand separating the floodwater and the ocean. Every year Sable Island feels the effects - wind, rain, swell - of one or more tropical storms or hurricanes. The tropical storm season normally spans June to November, but these storms are most frequent during August to October, with a pronounced peak in early September. The last hurricane to affect the island was Gustav, September 10, 2002.
