On September 28 2003, Hurricane Juan struck mainland Nova Scotia causing a swath of destruction through the Halifax region and beyond. However, while the hurricane was bashing the mainland, on Sable Island there was a clear starry night overhead and winds reached only about 45 knots (80 km/h). During the day, as the edge of the system approached the island, Station staff launched aerology balloons and sondes every three hours. These extra sondes were an MSC contribution to an international meteorologial study gathering data on storm processes.
