On Sable Island high winds are an ever-present consideration - gear and supplies are routinely stowed and secured to prevent materials blowing about. Major winter storms can have winds far stronger than hurricane winds. The worst for the island are the "nor'easters", winter storms which form off Cape Hatteras and don't pass over any land until they hit Sable Island.
