Walruses - the largest and most robust of pinnipeds - occupy shallow waters, usually less than 100 meters deep, and feed mainly on shellfish (bivalve mollusks), a diet which they occasionally supplement with other organisms such as crabs, fishes and seals.

 

Accumulations of beached shells are evidence of the various mollusk species found in Sable Island waters - species which 100s of years ago may have been on the Chez Walrus menu.
