Visitors to Sable Island often bring lunches prepared by caterers, and these lunches always involve a lot of garbage. A typical example is this pile - plastic food trays, sauce tubs and cutlery, plastic bags, glass bottles, and paper napkins - left over after a small group of visitors finished their meal. The plastic in this pile, cleaned of food remnants etc, amounted to 930 grams - almost one kilogram of plastic debris.

If customers made a point of requesting it, there might be some incentive for caterers to prepare food with a minimum of throw-away packaging. |
