A horse called Gem is a real band stallion on Sable, and is featured in the Green Horse website. Jamie Bastedo, the author of Free as the Wind, found many of the elements for his text in existing materials – such the name “Gem” for the central horse character in the book. Similarly, the book’s title is taken from the Nova Scotia Museum’s website in which pages about the Sable horses are titled “Free as the Wind”.
