Spring on Sable Island

(June 2003)

In the northern hemisphere, the spring season is the period between March 21 (vernal or spring equinox) and June 21 (summer solstice). At the spring equinox the days and nights are of equal length, and the summer solstice is the longest day of the year. Thus spring is a period of lengthening daylight as well as warming temperature. On Sable Island it is also a time of nesting birds and new-born foals, fresh green foliage of wild rose and beach pea, the smell of juniper on the warm afternoon breeze, and the scent of petrels in the cool night air.
