A Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus chick, mid-May. Very soon after hatching, gull chicks leave the nest, and `hide' in nearby vegetation. They find cover not only in vegetation, but also use driftwood or beach litter - even the cavities of half-decomposed carcasses of seal and horse provide hide-outs for young gulls.
