American Bittern Botaurus lentiginosus hiding in the pond edge vegetation on May 5. This heron species is only occasionally reported on Sable Island, and usually in the fall. Bitterns are difficult to spot because when alarmed they freeze with neck stretched up and bill pointing skyward.
