Hind flippers - all that remains of a shark victim, a seal which had been tagged by DFO shortly after birth on Sable Island. Some seals killed by sharks are probably entirely consumed by the predator or by scavengers at sea, and so there would be no body remains left to wash up on the beach. Thus the number of shark-killed seals found during the study provides only a minimum estimate of shark-inflicted mortality at Sable Island - there is no way of knowing how many more seals were killed by sharks but were not counted because the carcasses were lost or consumed.
