Adult male grey seal with a shark-inflicted scar, seen alive and well in the Sable Island breeding colony in January 1987 and again in January 1995. Numerous seals on the island bear healed scars, marking them as shark attack survivors. It is likely that many such individuals were attacked when they were younger and smaller, and, in some cases, as the seals grew the original size and shape of wounds became distorted. |
