Mother and pup grey seals Halichoerus grypus are one of the two resident seal species on Sable Island. The greatest number of shark-killed seal carcasses are found on the beach during winter - this coincides with the grey seal breeding season when large numbers of weaned naive pups enter the water around the island. Weaned grey seal pups comprise >50% of all seals killed.
