On August 3rd the Merrimac's skipper returned with a fishing boat and crew and a plan to patch the hole where the keel had been, and to tow the yacht off the beach and back to the mainland. Although the hole was repaired, various problems with ropes, timing and surf conditions, foiled the plan. The salvage team left, and the Merrimac was essentially abandoned on Sable Island.
