The contrails of transatlantic flights passing westward over Sable Island. Roughly 400 transatlantic flights pass over the Sable Island area each day. There is an aviation beacon on the Island (producing a signal receivable over a distance of 80 km). The present beacon was installed, and is maintained by, the offshore energy industry. It replaced a more powerful and fully operational beacon that was demolished by the Canadian Coast Guard in the mid-1990s. |
