A live oiled Common Murre Uria aalge on the beach in March.  The Island provides a platform for monitoring numbers and trends in seabird oiling in the Scotian Shelf waters. The Sable Island program is one of the few long-term and regular beached bird surveys carried out in Eastern Canada.
