The remains of the last light keeper’s house at East Light. The Sable Island Humane Establishment (the life-saving stations) began operation in 1801. With the introduction of RADAR in the 1940s, the Island became less of a hazard to navigation, and the life saving activities were phased out. Most of the life-saving station structures have been buried by wind-blown sand, and rotted and collapsed under the weight of the damp sand.
