Before each flight the radiosonde is prepared. The sonde is powered by a water-activated 18 volt battery which must be soaked for 3 minutes before being connected and enclosed in the radiosonde package. The attached blue plastic `launching reel' holds 40 m of string which will unwind once the balloon is released.
