Various types of balloons have been used, but all are made of latex and must be handled with care - even the slightest scrape or contamination of the latex surface may cause the balloon to break. Before release, the balloon's diameter is about 2 meters. It expands as it rises up through the atmosphere, and by the time the flight is terminated, the balloon diameter can be as much as 12 meters.
