Sun shining into the glass globe is focused to a point on a chemically treated strip of cardboard, and burns a trace along the strip as the position of the sun relative to the earth changes during daylight hours. While the sun shines, the scorch marks the strip - for periods when the sun is obscured by cloud or fog, the strip is unmarked.
