The Sable Island `airport' in winter - the aircraft on approach. The fixed- wing used for transport of personnel and supplies to and from the island is a Britten-Norman Islander - an aircraft designed for short distance take-off and landing. In a good wind, the Islander can take off in 100 feet or less. The large inflated tires allow for landing on the beach.
