Aerial view of the south beach area where the aircraft usually lands. Before the aircraft leaves Halifax for Sable Island, the beach must be checked by station personnel. To serve as a landing strip, the beach must be flat, firm, clear of litter (and clear of seals, horses and birds) and provide required length aligned with wind direction. If suitable area is found, the truck is driven back-and-forth to mark, with tire tracks, location and orientation of the strip - thus making it visible from the air. |
