In addition to IONS 2004 ozonesonde programs at the North American sites, measurements for ICARTT 2004 were collected by aircraft from the UK, USA, France and Germany. NASA satellites provided large-scale context for the airborne observations. Satellite observations of CO showed the locations of polluted air from fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning. The Sable Station contributed by obtaining atmospheric profiles of O3 concentrations together with profiles of temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction. ICARTT 2004 was the first time a coordinated international campaign had been launched to establish a benchmark reading from which global atmospheric policies could be developed.
