The pumping rate of the ozonesonde is determined by measuring the average time for a single soap bubble to pass through a calibrated 100 ml burette. Soap bubbles are generated putting the connector tube on the cathode cell exhaust port and gently squeezing the rubber bulb to make a bubble. With practice, the stopwatch results are accurate to within a tenth of a second.
