Equipment set up at the air chemistry building for the 1993 North Atlantic Regional Experiment (NARE). The NARE programs (called "summer intensives") were periods of intense study. Many chemical species found in the air were sampled, adding to the scientific database. These data are used in a wide range of completed and ongoing atmospheric research programs. During NARE 93, scientists with the University of Michigan measured levels of oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, and found unexpected high concentrations. These chemicals are products of the combustion of fossil fuels, and the source was likely emissions from shipping traffic.
