Fog collector. This instrument is deployed whenever a fog event, in the absence of precipitation, is predicted to last 6 hrs or longer. Persistent fogs moving through the area are usually advection fogs which are formed when large-scale horizontal movement of air masses brings warm moist air into contact with cooler surfaces. The air is cooled rapidly and condensation occurs (i.e. water vapour carried in the air becomes water droplets). Thus thick cloud forms on the surface of land and/or water. |
