Prior to 1998, air samples for CO2 were collected in Pyrex glass vacuum flasks (wound with a protective layer of surgical tape) which were taken out to the beach and filled by technicians about once a week. It was necessary to find a location upwind of seals hauled out on the beach. Because CO2 is a product of respiration, the exhaled breath from groups of seals was a potential source of contamination |
