Published by Red Deer Press (Calgary, Alberta), the book features 16 double-page illustrations by Halifax artist Susan Tooke, with text by Jamie Bastedo. The story is based on the children’s letter-writing campaign of 1960 that contributed to reversing a Government of Canada decision to remove the horses from Sable Island.
May 9th, Wednesday evening in the auditorium Susan Tooke and Zoe Lucas will give an illustrated talk that will weave an account of the artist’s illustrating process with details about the island’s natural history.
May 13th, Sunday afternoon in the marine room – general museum admission applies Susan will give readings for children and their adults, and will explain how she researched, composed and painted her illustrations. Zoe will be on hand to answer questions about Sable Island and the horses.
