The Sable Island Station - Infrastructure

 

The Sable Island Station is the primary, and the only continuous, human presence on Sable Island.  It comprises 20 buildings, and provides a number of services in support of station programs and for other Island users.

 

The station also directly implements a number of programs for other operators.  These include,

  • Meteorology

  • Climatology

  • Aerology

  • Magnetic Observatory

  • Air Chemistry

  • Atmospheric research

 

Municipal services.

  • Electricity generation and distribution: capable of providing 70 Kw of power, with full emergency backup.

  • Water treatment and supply: filtering, treatment, and sterilization.

  • Sewage disposal: aerobic and septic

  • Waste storage, transport, and disposal: waste is categorized as compostable, recyclable, burnable, non-burnable, and hazardous.  Non- burnable and hazardous materials are stored on site for later transport and disposal on the mainland.

  • Transportation of freight and personnel: vehicle transport of visitors, other groups, freight, supplies, and equipment.

  • Communications and data services: voice and data communications, Internet.

 

Aviation

  • Aircraft Support:  assist with flight following, flight planning, and meteorology for all aircraft coming to the Island or the Sable area.

  • Helicopter Refueling: assist with maintaining on-island fuel supplies and dispensing fuel.

  • Runway reconnaissance and maintenance: locate and mark suitable landing areas, removing debris.

 

Logistics

  • Accommodations and storage: provide accommodations for a wide range of visitors and support personnel, and storage for equipment and field supplies.

  • Fuel storage and distribution: maintain stores of a variety of fuels, meeting environmental and safety standards.

  • Maintenance services: perform maintenance on station facilities, but also help all other Island operators with maintenance labour, equipment, and supplies.

  • Security monitoring: monitor buildings, equipment, and supplies to ensure safety and integrity.

  • Support to visitors: providing information and logistical support.

 

Emergency services

  • Medical assistance and emergency support: maintain medical equipment and supplies, as well as a variety of emergency food, clothing, and accommodations supplies.

  • On-island search and rescue: provide SAR services for visitors and island operators, and rescue and retrieval operations.

  • Environmental Emergency Services: assist with environmental security, and spill containment and cleanup.
