On Sable Island during summer, a jellyfish - the Portuguese man-of-war Physalia physalia - is occasionally cast ashore with Gulf Stream flotsam. This unmistakable species has a balloon-like float with a ridge above, and suspended below are specialized feeding and defensive structures (e.g. stingers).
