Glass floats, from old fishing nets long-ago rotted away, are occasionally found on the beach.  Mostly dark bottle-green in colour and with a diameter of 12-13 cm, many have no markings.  On a few, however, words and symbols are discernable.  Apparently glass floats used in the nets of fishing fleets from both Europe and Asia (particularly Japan), were made of recycled glass from wine and saki bottles.  Floats found on Sable Island are likely European in origin.
