Walrus skulls, mandibles and fragments are, once in a while, found on the beach.  Historical accounts report that walrus Obobenus rosmarus were plentiful on Sable Island during the 16th and 17th centuries, and they were hunted for meat, skin and tusks.  There are no walrus on the island now, and of the few beach-cast tusks and skulls found these days, some are in the keeping of the people who collected them, and some have been deposited at various natural history museums.
