The Station Operations Manager looking for a landing strip. Before flying to Sable Island, the pilot waits in Halifax to receive a report and “go-ahead” from the Island.  The Manager looks for a strip of sand that is long enough, flat, firm and unobstructed, and correctly oriented with respect to the winds of the day. A pattern of tire tracks made by driving back and forth along the chosen strip of beach provides a marking of runway location and orientation that the pilot can see from the air
