The area of the dunes and freshwater ponds between the Station and West Light provides a variety of landscape and wildlife. Several family bands and all-male groups of Sable Island horses often graze or rest near the ponds, and breeding and transient birds feed in/around the ponds. During nesting season, eggs and young are hidden in the vegetation, and in all seasons dune terrain and some plant species are vulnerable to trampling damage, thus it is very important to explore with care.
