In and under moist balls of horse dung are many species of invertebrates, including beautiful “scarab beetles”. These two Aphodius species – 6 to 8 mm in length – are very common in the numerous manure piles on Sable Island. From horses to beetles, there is much to see on the Island, and so long as the level of visitor activity remains low and well-managed, negative impacts are few to nil. However, the impacts of visitors can only be managed and monitored if there is a year-round human presence on Sable Island – effective stewardship of Sable Island would be impossible without the Sable Island Station.
