The Sable Island Station has four diesel generators. Three are located in the utility building (a), and the fourth (the APU, alternative power unit) is housed separately (b), about 20 m from the main building. Only one of the three main generators is running at any one time. The APU provides back-up in the event of a failure, and will automatically kick-in to maintain power while Station staff deal with problems. Normal power consumption on the Island is about 25-30 Kw.
