The EXCEL-R is comprised of a purpose-built direct drive 38-pole PM (permanent magnet) alternator. The alternator has an “inside-out” configuration in that the outer shell (containing magnets) rotates about the fixed internal stator structure. Thus the alternator incorporates the rotor hub; it does not have a central rotating shaft; it puts the front bearing in the rotor plane; and it has no brushes. Having a minimum of moving parts enhances the reliability of the unit.
