On March 25th, less than a week after the turbines had been raised, the system was tested by several days of high winds peaking at 96.5 km/h (52 knots). The EXCEL turbine has no shut-down wind speed, but the Autofurl®) overspeed control is initiated at 48-54 km/h (26-30 knots) - the rotor is turned partially out of the wind through an application of aerodynamic forces and gravity (i.e. does not rely on brakes, springs or gravity). When the wind speed subsides, the rotor automatically turns back into the wind. The turbines are designed to survive sustained winds of up to 194 km/h (104.5 knots).
