Depending on the season and rainfall patterns, Sable Island horses may dig down through several to 50 centimetres of sand to reach water. Here a young horse has found water just a few centimetres below the sand surface. Although horses on the western half of the island have access to numerous permanent ponds, they also dig waterholes.
