Red mineral sand on the eroding face of a south beach dune. The island is made up of fine to medium sand, with abundant heavy minerals. On the south side of the island, particularly during the high wind and heavy sea conditions of winter, the beaches become dramatically coloured with wide swaths of burgundy and black as heavy mineral sands - zirconium, magnetite, garnet - are sorted and deposited on the surface by wave and wind action.
